John Fagan, Chief Who is Fast of Foot and Lip |
|
This Brother, an Eagle Scout Candidate from Troop 996, was inducted into the Order as a member of Shu-Shu-Gah Lodge in 2002 and sealed his membership in the Brotherhood in 2003. He immediately began a strong history of service to both the Chapter and the Lodge. He served the Phoenix Chapter as an Elangomat and youth officer. In 2004, he was elected to be the first Chief of the newly-formed Majauchsin Chapter – a position he held for two terms. For his commitment to the Chapter, he was presented the Silver Heron Award in 2006.
On the Lodge level, he was a member of the Publications, Ceremonies, Elangomat and Unit Service Committees. His leadership as chairman was instrumental in the success of the Trade-O-Ree Committee in 2002 and the Lodge Banquet Committee in 2004. As an elected officer, he served as the Secretary-Treasurer from 2004-2005.
This year, he continued his service to Shu-Shu-Gah by taking on the responsibility of, arguably, the most difficult position in the Lodge – that of Lodge Chief. Concurrently while in his first year at college, he assumed the leadership of the Lodge during a very important time. In a cooperative effort between Chief and Adviser, he was successful in improving relations between the Order and the Unit in Brooklyn. Under his leadership, Shu-Shu-Gah led its first Salute to the Scoutmaster’s Dinner and played an integral role in the planning and implementation of the Council’s recently successful Camporee.
During the past four years, he worked on the Camp Aquehonga Staff – devoting his entire summer to serving Scouts in the camp setting – just as when the Order was founded. In his year as a Counselor-in-Training, he was even referred to as “The Future of Ten Mile River.” He has distinguished himself as a leader on the staff, and is always willing to go above and beyond that which is asked of him. This summer he will continue this same servant-leadership as an example for others to follow.
One recommendation read “There is no one the lodge can count on more than he to get things done or to make the Executive Committee’s thoughts into reality. He has risen to the challenges of his offices and obligations with flying colors. He has balanced his responsibilities to school, work, family, and Scouting better than anyone his age that I have seen in the last few years. He will be remembered as an excellent Lodge Chief.”For exemplary service and dedication to his home unit, his Lodge and his camp, the Vigil Honor is proudly bestowed upon Brother John Fagan.
The Indian Name given is Sakima Lachpiechsin Kschamehhellan, which is interpreted as Chief Who Is Fast of Foot And Lip.

This Brother was inducted into the Order in 1970 as a member of Shu-Shu-Gah Lodge and sealed his membership in the Brotherhood in 2003. Along this Brother’s long career in Scouting, he has shown a rare ability to encourage and recruit both youth and adults to take an active role in the Scouting program as well as the Order of the Arrow.
His many Scouting highlights include various accomplishments such as the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver, Bronze Pelican Award, Scouter’s Training Award, Scouter’s Key and James E. West Fellow. He is also a Wood Badge trained leader.
This Eagle Scout has also fulfilled many key leadership positions in his home unit as well as our Lodge. Throughout his 31 years as Scoutmaster of Troop 510 he has provided young men the opportunity to lead and to discover their own love of the woods and camping. One recommendation read “He truly understands his primary responsibility as an Arrowman – his obligation to his home unit. He inspires others to strive in cheerful service.” Scouts in his troop have been known to say about this individual that he has unselfish interests in fostering character, citizenship and fitness. His temperament epitomizes the true Vigil Honor member – responsibility to his home unit, service to the Council and unwavering support of the development of the youth in the program.
Service to the Chapter typifies his involvement in Shu-Shu-Gah Lodge. First as a key adult leader, and later as the Chapter Adviser, he is committed to providing opportunities to youth in his chapter’s locale. Taking on additional responsibilities, he is an example which others can follow. Whether it is in a spotlight role of twice leading our lodge’s contingent to NOAC or in a background support role in the kitchen, he “does” simply because it is the right thing to do.
One recommendation read “Our lodge is where we are today because of adults like this Brother. His commitment to the youth of our lodge has been stellar. He is a great role model for our youth and a great role model for our adults to see what a true adviser is.”For exemplary service and dedication to his home unit, his Chapter and his Lodge, the Vigil Honor is proudly and most-deservedly bestowed upon Brother Anthony Bracciante.
The Indian Name given is Genachgihat Elhakeit, which is interpreted as Storyteller of His Tribe. |
